From little things, big things grow

For 4 years, Jay was the lead mechanical architect of Zymergen’s Reconfigurable Automation Cart system (now Gingko Bioworks). Jay designed RACs to contain MECA500 robots and designed custom grippers (see videos above and below) for the robots to pick and place labware. The robots lived inside HEPA filtered positive pressure enclosures with PLC controlled door locks, safety relays, stack lights, push buttons, and proximity sensors. Robot pathing was simulated in RoboDK and were programmed to pick and place labware between scientific instrumentation and a reconfigurable MagneMotion linear conveyour system. Jay designed hardware for rapid teaching of robot teach points.
